Emotions
 by Irma Borgen,
Brookdale Village at Skyline

The 2009 Memories in the Making Art Auction in Colorado Springs was a great success! Two hundred and thirty five attendees sipped complimentary champagne on the balcony with a view of Pikes Peak. The new venue, Norris Penrose Event Center, helped guests enjoy a unique and poignant evening honoring the work of Alzheimer Artists selected from Memories in the Making art programs throughout Colorado Springs. Another new addition, Pistol Pete Auctions, was a big hit with attendees yodeling to entertain the guests as were the 62 prize balloons with complementary overnight stays at hotels, jewelry and other gifts. Summit Catering provided delicious appetizers, a full entrée buffet and dessert served at the tables.   The Live Auction raised $19,500 plus $25,000 in sponsorships and $1562 raised through 3rd party fundraisers.

About the Auction

Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the Making® is a creative art expression program for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. Even after people with dementia have lost the ability to use words, they are often able to express thoughts and emotions as well as share memories through painting with watercolors. The art program offers an opportunity for those afflicted with this disease to share the essence of who they are and what they care about.

Beautiful artwork is created by those with memory impairment in 18 Memories in the Making® art classes held weekly throughout Colorado Springs. A jury of professional artists selects the artwork for the auction, which is then professionally framed by local framers for display at the annual Memories in the Making Art Show and Auction.

Select pieces of Alzheimer’s watercolors are paired with the original work of local professional artists. Sometimes it’s a color that resonates in the work or the subject of the artwork itself that speaks to the professional artist. The work being auctioned in pairs at this year’s event includes:

  • Garden Fireworks, a water color painting created on Yupo (a plastic material used for many printing jobs which allows the colors to remain vibrant) by professional artist Larraine Watry paired with  Grape Hyacinths by Alzheimer’s artist Vivian Lorenz of ViewPointe Independent Retirement and Assisted Living.
  • Puerto Vallarta, an oil painting by professional artist Sally Hegarty paired with Cruising by Alzheimer’s artist Ruth Stolaroff of Sunrise Senior Center of Colorado Springs.
