This full-day program equips participants to lead a series of four, one-hour in-services designed to upgrade the skills of direct care staff in delivering better care to people with Alzheimer's or other dementias.

We emphasize practical, problem-solving approaches to providing care and present information on the basics of Alzheimer's disease. We also discuss how to apply adult learning principals while training staff in:

  • Understanding dementia - care practices informed by research and best practices
  • Communication strategies - discovering new ways to make connections
  • Challenging behaviors - learning each individual's rhythms and feedback language
  • Activity-based care - effective ways of engaging people with Alzheimer's and fostering community

This program is designed for staff in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities (including nurse educators, in-service facilitators, staff trainers, and training supervisors) to meet the initial requirement for Alzheimer's training mandated by the State of Illinois (Title 77, Chapter 1, Subchapter c, Part 300, Section 300.7050). The program also may be relevant to any professional involved in caring for people with dementia in community-based or residential care settings.
