About Support Groups

Support groups are regularly scheduled gatherings of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, family, friends, and other care partners. These groups provide emotional, educational, and social support for all participants. Confidentiality is always observed.

Support groups create a safe, confidential, and supportive environment that enables participants to develop mutual support and social relationships. They also provide participants with education about issues related to dementia and support to develop the skills to solve problems. The groups empower caregivers and people with dementia to attain their own personal, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being in an effort to optimally care for themselves and each other.

All support group facilitators are trained initially and on a yearly basis. Chapter staff keeps facilitators up to date on the latest issues including research, behaviors, medication, and caregiver support. Facilitators are monitored yearly to ensure the quality of the groups.

We currently have many specialty groups including: early-stage, younger-onset, late-onset, spouses, adult children, Latino, and frontotemporal dementia.

**Please note** All new members please call the facilitator listed to confirm the date, time and location.

Drumming Circle sets a pace for interactive fun and self expression

Spouses Kathy and Jerry Hawe create a groove during the Drumming Circle.

"The rhythm is gonna get ya." Teri Bennett hopes the infectious drum beats heard at the Drumming Circle will retain and recruit participants. The interactive activity at the early-stage engagement program began in November at the Timonium office.

The idea sprang from a conversation between colleagues Bennett, a Helpline coordinator and Yolanda Wright, an Early-Stage Support Group coordinator. Bennett says, "I'd mentioned how I and my husband had been active in a drumming circle and how much we enjoyed it. This led us to think that this could be something enriching for the people who come to our support meetings."

The six people who attended the inaugural class included two married couples and a mother and daughter. Participants sat in seats that formed a circle as Steve Bennett, Teri's husband, demonstrated how different tones are made by alternately tapping a drum in the center and on the rim. The Bennetts supplied the drums for the group that ranged from a darbuka and doumbek that are from the Middle East to the Irish bodhran that is struck with a two-sided tickler. Maracas and cow bells were also passed around. The group enthusiastically joined in.

"There is a rhythm to everything--from the sound of our heartbeats and breathing to the rustling of leaves," Teri Bennett told the group. As Steve Bennett pounded a beat, the group copied what they heard. "There is no wrong way to beat a drum," says Teri Bennett. "This is an opportunity to set your own pace and be expressive as you de-stress."

As the drumming continued, smiles and laughter filled the room. When Wright asked the group to use words to describe how they felt about the experience, the responses included "Freedom." "Fun." and "It made me feel like a kid again."

Terri Bennett says, "We expect the size of the group to grow as people start talking about their positive experience."

The next drumming circle will be held January 11, 2017, 6:30-8:00 p.m., at the Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
