“Approximately 20 percent of Alzheimer’s families use one or more of these programs,” said William Fisher, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter. “At a time when researchers project the number of Californians living with Alzheimer’s will double by 2030, the Governor’s actions are incomprehensible.” The cuts to both the Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Centers and Adult Day Health programs along with the Caregiver Resource Centers will make it harder for families to keep their family member with dementia in the home and community. Many families will be forced to either reduce their work hours to provide care at home or seek placement in a more expensive skilled nursing setting. The Governor added an additional $40 million in cuts to In-Home Support Services (IHSS) home care and made it more difficult for people with cognitive impairment to become eligible for Medi-Cal. Both IHSS and Caregiver Resources Centers attract Federal funds, so the cuts in state support may mean California will turn away millions of Federal dollars. “We anticipate higher call volume from families seeking information, referral and support as the full effect of these budget cuts are realized and families struggle to find answers,” said Fisher. These programs have served as the underpinning of a network of care for Alzheimer’s families since the mid-1980s. The following cuts are in the budget passed by both houses of the California legislature:
