Wine and Roses Festival raises $205K for Alzheimer services
Three-day event raises awareness, funds for Alzheimer's Association
The 15th annual Wine and Roses Festival concluded Saturday night, bringing to a close a weekend that raised an estimated $205,000 in support of the Alzheimer’s Association, Big Sioux Chapter.
“We’re grateful to all our friends in the community, old and new, who came together this weekend to support our work,” said Eric Newhouse, Alzheimer’s Association interim president/CEO. All proceeds raised by the Wine and Roses Festival support programs and services provided throughout metro Siouxland, northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota.
These include Senior Day Services, Siouxland’s first and only dementia-friendly adult day program; coordinated care consultation for Siouxlanders with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers; the 24-hour Helpline; in-home respite care; family and professional caregiver education; memory loss awareness groups; and wandering prevention and response through MedicAlert + Safe Return and Project Lifesaver.
Persons who were not able to attend the Wine and Roses Festival but still wish to make a donation may do so by contacting the Alzheimer's Association at (712) 279-5802.
The Wine and Roses Festival kicked off Thursday night at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars with the largest Time to Remember ever, attracting a crowd of nearly 200 and raising $20,000 for Plymouth County services, and Friday night saw a sold-out Winemakers Dinner for over two hundred guests at the Marina Inn in South Sioux City.
Madigan to host Saturday wine clinic; Firesteed joins the Festival
We are pleased to announce that Katie Madigan, assistant winemaker for St. Francis Winery and Vineyards, will conduct the 2008 Wine Clinic, sponsored by Van Meter Industrial.The Wine Clinic will be held Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. at Bev’s on the River, 1110 Larsen Park Road on the Sioux City riverfront. Tickets for the event are $10 and available at Bev’s.
The Wine Clinic is one of several events planned for the April 3-5 Wine & Roses Festival, an annual fundraising and awareness event in suppot of the Alzheimer’s Association, Big Sioux Chapter.
This year’s clinic will provide a unique and objective wine education experience. Madigan will focus on the different aspects of wine, with an emphasis on wine styles and varieties. The clinic is designed to help new and experienced wine enthusiasts gain a better understanding of the wine making process and appreciation.
Firesteed Vineyards will also be joining the Wine and Roses Festival as a guest winery. Firesteed is a Seattle-based 'virtual winery' that produces Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from Oregon grapes, as well as the northern Italian variety Barbera d'Asti.
Alzheimer's Association honors Pflanz Electronics
At a press conference held this morning, the Alzheimer’s Association, Big Sioux Chapter recognized Pflanz Electronics as the Signature Sponsor of the 15th annual Wine and Roses Festival, and announced event dates and guest winemakers.
Owner Vance Pflanz (left) presented a $10,000 donation to Alzheimer’s Association president/CEO Mary Jo Sikkema. “It is with great pride that Pflanz Electronics continues its support with the Alzheimer’s Association, Big Sioux Chapter,” said Pflanz.
Pflanz has a long history of giving to the Alzheimer’s Association over the years, including the annual Wine and Roses Festival, a benefit concert featuring Dr. Dendrite and the Twisted Synapses last St. Patrick’s Day, and contributions for Albums for Alzheimer’s, a program to support music therapy services.
The Wine and Roses Festival, to be held the weekend of April 3-5 in Le Mars and at South Sioux City’s Marina Inn, is the Big Sioux Chapter’s largest single fundraising event in support of Alzheimer services throughout northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska, and southeast South Dakota.
Festival chair Ken O’Dea and honorary chairs Greg and Teri Grupp also announced guest winemakers in attendance and a full schedule of the weekend’s events.
The theme for this year’s Wine and Roses Festival is inspired by the 1957 Hollywood Classic An Affair to Remember.
All proceeds raised by the Wine and Roses Festival support programs and services provided by the Alzheimer's Association, Big Sioux Chapter throughout northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota.
