NARFE
This is an especially busy month in our shared fight against Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's Association AIM Advocacy Forum took place June 17-19, drawing more than 1,000 advocates to Washington, D.C., to ask Congress to continue to make Alzheimer's a national priority. Just before the Forum, the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee announced an important first step toward another historic NIH funding increase. NARFE members, who are an essential part of the Association's nationwide network of advocates, provide a strong presence at the Forum and in all our efforts to increase research funding for Alzheimer's at the NIH. We sincerely thank NARFE members for our continued partnership.

Alzheimer's research funding at NIH gets important boost
On June 14, The House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee proposed a $401 million increase for Alzheimer's research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for FY2019. Alzheimer's Association President and CEO Harry Johns noted, "Over the past five years we have seen monumental increases in Alzheimer's and dementia research at the NIH. After so many years of historic funding increases, it's important to remind ourselves how critical each additional increase is to achieving our mission. We also know these increases only happen thanks to the tireless efforts and generosity of many people. It is because of our amazing advocates. It is because of our generous donors to the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM) and the Alzheimer's Association. And it is because of the relentless work of our staff." Learn more.

Alzheimer's advocate Brian Leung, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California, focuses his research on how the immune system alters the nervous system in Alzheimer's disease. This year, he's making his fourth trip to the Alzheimer's Association AIM Advocacy Forum to help end Alzheimer's disease: "Being around people who find their advocacy voice in different ways, we all end up with a common goal, and that energy is infectious."
