Healthy Living for Brain & Body: Tips from the Latest Research

For centuries, we've known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.


Claire Day has been on staff of the Alzheimer’s Association since 2001. She is the Chief Program Officer at the Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter and as such, oversees all clinical operations and service delivery throughout the Chapter’s territory. She and her highly trained staff deliver community social services in the form of education, support, advocacy and care management to people with dementia and their families, as well as to professional caregivers. In addition, Ms. Day oversees all research initiatives. Prior to joining the Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter in 2017, Ms. Day was the Senior Vice President at the Delaware Valley Chapter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, serving in a similar role.
 
Ms. Day is a Clinical Social Worker and received her degree from Bloomsburg University in 1993. Prior to joining the Alzheimer’s Association, she worked in the long-term care field as a patient and family advocate.
 
In 2018, Ms. Day was appointed as the Chapter Lead for the U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. Pointer) team in California at UC Davis. U.S. Pointer is a two-year clinical trial to evaluate whether lifestyle interventions that simultaneously target multiple risk factors protect cognitive function in older adults at increased risk for cognitive decline.
 
Ms. Day has more than twenty years of experience as a family and professional educator in dementia care, has appeared on numerous television and radio programs throughout the region. She is the author of two forwards to Alzheimer’s caregiver books; Life Lessons from a Baker’s Dozen by Kerry Luksic and Lucy’s Tears by John Rydel. She was a national Presenter at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Annual Dementia Conferences. In 2008 she received the inaugural “Spirit of Community” Award from Stapeley in Germantown. In 2012 she assisted with a story on NBC Nightly News showcasing support services to caregivers. Today she co-hosts a monthly Internet radio program on dementia caregiving. One of her greatest accomplishments was being selected on a National Help Team following Hurricane Katrina, traveling for two weeks to Mississippi to provide hurricane relief to people with dementia and their loved ones. She uses the lessons learned to help improve the quality of life to those she serves.

Cora Wen is a longtime yoga educator and teacher. She has worked with people of all levels and experiences, and loves to share her enthusiasm and genuine love of yoga with others. This is an ongoing series of a short 30 min Lunchtime Yoga Break to help you keep your body and mind fit, while raising awareness and demystification of Alzheimer’s. So many of us have lived and lost family and friends to this disease. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month, so we are bringing these classes to you to provide support and some fun to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Cora will lead us through an easy chair yoga session that will stretch your body and stimulate your mind - she is a specialist in working with injuries and limited movement, so can adapt a yoga practice to meet all bodies. Join us for 30 minutes to destress and improve your range of motion, decrease back pain and general soreness. The Alzheimer's Association leads the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.


Over the past 28 years, Cora Wen has built an international reputation with her expertise and knowledge of anatomy and alignment, specializing in Restorative Yoga. She was one of the very first E-RYT500s registered with Yoga Alliance, and created  YogaBloom Trainings, offering a range of learning opportunities from 100 hour Deepening Practice to 200RYS and 300RYS certifications.  She has participated in developing clinical studies in yoga with the University of California San Francisco, the National Institute of Health and Vanderbilt Center for Integrative Health.  A contributor to Yoga Journal, Yoga international and past keynote speaker for Yoga Alliance, she is a specialist on Asian culture and participates as a consultant and lead teacher in 200RYT and 500RYT programs in the US, Canada and Asia.
 
Cora has infectious enthusiasm and a natural, friendly approach, and is especially adept and sensitive to helping students find freedom from injuries and chronic ailments. She has been a student of Buddhism since childhood, and is dedicated to seeing and meeting individual needs, in asana and the spiritual underpinnings of yoga.  She continues to practice and study yoga in the Iyengar tradition, believing strongly in its transformation and healing powers.

Guided Meditation with The Meditationist

Meditation is the act of calming the mental chatter so that one can witness the patterns and conditioning of one’s own mind. It does not need to be an esoteric or complex practice. In fact, it often begins with a simple shift in perspective.

There is no preparation required for this session. You can arrive exactly as you are, with an open and curious mind. It may be beneficial to minimize distractions such as electronics, pets, and other potential interruptions. Meditation is time we take for ourselves, in an act of self-care and exploration.
 
In this foundational course, you will learn:
– Two or three meditation modalities
– The background and history of these meditation techniques
– An overview of the benefits of meditation
– Some common meditation misconceptions
– How to begin and maintain a regular practice
 
The instructor will provide pointers on how to begin meditating, increase the effectiveness of your personal practice, and how to integrate meditation into a busy schedule.
There will also be two or three short, guided meditation sessions so you have a real taste for the experience of meditation.
About the Instructor:
El Guia means “the guide” in Spanish. Paul specializes in guiding his clients to a place of ease, calm, and resilience through meditation. He works with people one-on-one and in small groups to help them develop and maintain a meditation practice that supports them in their daily lives.

Zumba with Denise Lum

Denise is a mom of three who loves to share her passion for fitness, healthier eating and sustainability through Zumba Fitness and as a Business Leader with Tupperware. She has been a certified Zumba Instructor for over 7 years and also teaches Strong Nation, Zumba Toning, Aqua Zumba and Zumba Kids. She is Team Captain of Dance to Fight Alzheimer's, but encourages all Teams to raise funds by joining this event and inviting those that love to dance to take part and donate to their teams!

Food For Thought: Cooking to Protect Your Brain

About the Instructor:
Marie graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Dietetics. An avid traveler, she has explored her love of food while on the road. Marie's travels have taken her to study cheese-making in Tasmania, raw food in Western Australia, tea and fermented foods in the mountains of Korea and Ayurvedic cuisine and herbology in
Kerala. She moved back to the USA to attend a holistic culinary arts school in Berkeley, where she also worked and taught for several years. Marie presently lives in the Bay Area and works as an educator, private chef and is the Culinary Creative Director for Café Umami in Oakland.

Calming the Mind in Stressful Times, with Timothy Swords

This session is led by Timothy Swords who co-founded a Mindfulness Program at MUFG Union Bank in 2015, where he leads weekly mindfulness sessions. In the session, you’ll learn about science-proven benefits of meditation, experience a 20-minute guided meditation, and practice a 90-second “emergency grounding” tool to regain peace of mind. There will also be time for Q&A.
About the Instructor:
Timothy’s been practicing Vipassana Meditation practice since 1976, and has completed numerous silent residential retreats with over 2,000 hours of practice. He is a certified mindfulness instructor and has studied with Jack Kornfield, Trudy Goodman, Jon Kabat-Zinn and Phillip Moffitt. He currently a Director in Risk Management at MUFG Union Bank, the Board Chair for Interaction Associates and a Board Member of the Alzheimer’s Association Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter. Prior roles include senior positions at Fidelity Investments, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and CSC Index, where he led major strategy and business transformation programs. Timothy holds an MBA from Harvard University, a BS from Boston College and a Certificate in Executive Coaching from William James University.
