Reason to Hope Event draws Support and Builds Awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease
More than 250 community leaders gathered at The Pinnacle in Maumee on April 10 to hear first-hand stories of how Alzheimer’s’ disease has impacted local families and the need to fund research for a cure.
“We cannot and will not stand by and let this disease impact another generation of our family,” said Sandi Denniss, whose mother died from the disease.
The Reason to Hope event challenged participants to help change the path of Alzheimer’s disease. Today, 5.8M Americans live with the disease. In Northwest Ohio, almost 32,000 people are living with Alzheimer's disease, and 96,000 family and friends are providing care.
Julia Faulkner Pechlivanos, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio chapter, said, “It is so encouraging to see the enthusiasm in the room for the Alzheimer's Association mission, and our progress toward finding a treatment by 2025.”
Ruben Gonzalez, who has documented his dad’s journey with the disease via video, told the crowd, “It never gets easier.”
“My dad is in the 5.8 million affected,” he said. “I love you dad. I love you man.”
