Every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in Texas, and through continued research, we plan to find a cure. Until then we provide care and support to close to 50,000 people with the disease and close to 120,000 of their caregivers in Central Texas. Research shows that caregivers who feel better prepared for their caregiving role handle it much better and with much more confidence.

Being a full-time caregiver to someone with Alzheimer’s is one of the most difficult and stressful jobs imaginable. Respite provides relief to people who are caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Time away from caregiving responsibilities is essential to the well-being of caregivers. Respite care helps to reduce stress and improve the quality of life and quality of care provided by caregivers.

With funds raised through Amplify Austin, each qualified recipient of the respite scholarship will receive a set amount stipend. Payment will be made directly to the service provider, facility or center of their choice after service is provided.

The scholarship can cover the following types of respite:

  • In-home care services including companion services to the individual with companionship and supervised activities; personal care or home health aide services to provide assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting and exercising; and homemaker or maid services to help with laundry, shopping and preparing meals.
  • Skilled care services to help with medication and other medical services.
  • Adult day centers offer a place where the person with Alzheimer's can be with others in a safe environment. Staff leads planned activities, such as music and art programs. Transportation and meals are often provided. Please visit our Community Resource Center for information on local adult day centers.
  • Residential facilities offer the option for a stay overnight, for a few days or a few weeks. Overnight care allows caregivers to take an extended break or vacation while the person with dementia stays in a supervised, safe environment.
