Michelle and Zayd Cartanega, Walk Committee, Milwaukee

“It doesn’t take a lot to make a difference.”

Michelle and her son Zayd have been volunteering for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Milwaukee County for two years. Originally, they got involved with the walk through a co-worker. “I didn’t realize how much was involved in order to pull together a walk,” says Michelle. “But it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference and we wanted to be involved.”

Zayd, 12 years old, is the youngest member of the Walk Committee and he has embraced his role. He has gotten very creative in spreading awareness for the Walk and raising funds. At his school he sold flowers and organized a “Go Purple Day,” where all the 5th graders wore purple.

Michelle and Zayd fill many roles on walk day. They coordinate the Kids Clubhouse with coloring sheets and other activities and trail the last walkers of the day and help pick up cones and gather walk supplies.

Walk day is a family affair as Michelle’s children Zayd, Unays, Nusayba and Suhayla come out to support the mission!
