Valerie Cutting, Support Group Facilitator, Saukville

“It’s a rewarding experience to be able to help caregivers work through their challenges.”

Valerie has been a Support Group Facilitator for caregivers in Saukville for over a year. “I volunteer because I can see such a need to support the families who are going through the challenges of dementia,” says Valerie. “It’s hard for those who are affected by dementia, but also their loved ones.”

Valerie is the Executive Director at Wilkinson Woods Senior Community in Oconomowoc. She has worked in memory care throughout her career and feels like she has to share her knowledge. “My heart goes out to the families,” says Valerie. “After being immersed in this for work, and having dealt with dementia in my own family, I wanted to give back.” Valerie’s grandmother and several aunts have been impacted by dementia.

“It’s an enriching experience for the facilitator to be able to be involved,” Valerie says of her group. “Every time I leave a session, I feel good about the time I spent.”

She encourages others to volunteer. “It takes limited time on my part and I have this opportunity to give to others. We all live busy lives, yet every time I can participate in a session, I always walk away feeling really good about being able to support a family.”
