2018 Pilot Awards for Global Brain Health Leaders (GBHI)

Ideal cardiovascular health, cognitive decline and incident dementia

    Claire McEvoy, Ph.D., MPhil, RD
    Queen's University
    Belfast, United Kingdom

Dr. McEvoy plans to investigate if having better heart health reduces dementia risk in whites and blacks/African Americans (aged 70 and above) from the US Health Aging and Body Composition study. The pilot study proposes to generate knowledge about cardiovascular risk and its links to neurodegeneration using latest guidelines from the American Heart Association. The study aims to provide insight about how heart health risk patterns and their associations with cognitive decline and dementia risk differ by race and sex. Dr. McEvoy’s study could be used to develop strategies to control heart disease to improve brain health in older adults.
