2018 Pilot Awards for Global Brain Health Leaders (GBHI)

Predicting therapy effects in people with Alzheimer’s disease using tDCS

Adria Rofes, PhD, MSc, and Kyrana Tsapkini, PhD
Global Brain Health Institute and Johns Hopkins University-School of Medicine
Baltimore , MD - United States

Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease. As the disease progresses, the individual’s communication skills gradually decline. Loss of communication may impact social engagement and overall quality of life. Drs. Rofes and Tsapkini plan to use speech therapy paired with a safe and inexpensive brain stimulation technique called “Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)”. This pilot study will assess whether individuals with Alzheimer’s may benefit from such an intervention by measuring their responses to a session of speech therapy and stimulation.
