2019 Pilot Awards for Global Brain Health Leaders (GBHI)

The Alzheimer Café model: a process evaluation study

    Christine FitzGerald, PhD
Global Brain Health Institute and National University of Ireland
    Galway, Ireland

The study proposes a meetup model in a social setting called Alzheimer Café where people with dementia and their caregivers meet monthly to learn from each other and from health care professionals on dementia-related topics. Dr. Fitzgerald proposes that the benefits of this social model could include increased quality of life as well as support and service planning for families and caregivers. The results from this pilot study will be used to provide insights into what makes the model work well or if opportunities for improvement need to be explored. Dr. Fitzgerald’s study could impact dementia support services and guide its development.
