Sleep, cognitive decline and dementia-a comparison between China and the US

    Yue Leng, PhD, MD, MPhil
Global Brain Health Institute and University of California
San Francisco, CA - United States

Recent studies reveal that sleep disruption may affect the risk for Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases. Researchers believe the link between sleep and cognitive impairment could be driven by both genetic and cultural factors; however, the underlying mechanisms are as yet unclear. Dr. Leng plans to compare the association between sleep and cognitive aging in populations across the United States and China using data from the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study and the Shanghai Aging study, respectively. This study may add to our knowledge about the sleep characteristics critical for brain health and provide evidence for the development of sleep interventions among various populations.
