Preventable Burden of Dementia in South Africa

    Kirsty Bobrow, DPhil
    Global Brain Health Institute, UCSF
San Francisco, CA - United States

According to a 2011 census in South Africa, approximately 2.2 million individuals in South Africa have some form of dementia (https://alzheimers.org.za/prevalence-of-dementia/). With an increasingly aging population, this number may be projected to rise. Dr. Kirsty Bobrow will study how potential risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes, low education, physical inactivity and smoking may contribute to the risk of developing dementia in South Africa. Dr. Bobrow will also explore the potential association of sex and population groups with these different risk factors. The researchers will conduct the study by performing a comprehensive review of scientific literature in the field as well as analyzing the recent population-based South African survey data. The study results may be used to develop locally appropriate dementia prevention strategies for individuals in South Africa with the potential to be scaled to other countries.
