Cognitive Health and Functional Abilities of Illiterate Older Peruvians

    Martiza Pintado Caipa, M.D.
    Global Brain Health Institute, UCSF
    San Francisco, United States

Studies show that in Latin American countries such as Peru, there could be a lack of knowledge and awareness about dementia and potential activities to reduce later life risk. Researchers have found that this gap may be particularly noticeable in rural populations. Dr. Maritza Pintado Caipa and colleagues will characterize the cognitive and functional abilities of older in a rural community and an urban community in Peru. The researchers will evaluate the accuracy of three brief cognitive tests by exploring the association between the test results, functional abilities and brain changes in the rural and urban adults. If successful, the study results may generate preliminary data that may allow researchers to address large research questions, which could help inform policy-making at a national level.
