The Magdalena Project; erasing stigma around aging and dementia

    Gabri Christa, MFA
    Barnard College
New York, NY - United States

Gabri Christa’s project will facilitate the creation of the “MAGDELENA PROJECT” which aims to address stigma around aging and dementia as well as promote its awareness. This project will develop a story by exploring the life and dementia of Christa’s mother, Josephina Magdelena Aleida de Jong, using several mediums that include dance, film, projection and the spoken word. The Magdelena project aims to promote awareness about dementia and aging by connecting audiences, caregivers and family, via her performance piece. Christa will measure the impact that the performances have on community engagement by analyzing the content in a qualitative manner. Christa will also publish an entire issue on topics relating to aging and othering, in the online edition of the Journal Scholar and Feminist. Christa believes that this project may help reduce stigma for dementia and aging.
