Why Participate: Exploring Motives to Participate in Prevention Research

    Laura Booi, Ph.D.
    Newcastle University
    Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Research suggests that brain changes seen in dementia may be present years or even decades before clinical symptoms arise. Dr. Laura Booi believes therefore, that there is a need for dementia prevention research in mid-life. Using study participants who are cognitively unimpaired and middle-aged, Dr. Booi will explore motives, facilitators and structural barriers to participating in risk reduction research. To conduct her study, Dr. Booi will leverage an international study examining early biological markers of Alzheimer’s that is ongoing at the Global Brain Health Institute at the Trinity College Dublin and engage 50 of these study participants to further engage in this additional research. Dr. Booi will use her study results to build online educational resources for the general public that would focus on a) behavior changes associated with reducing lifestyle-related risk and b) reducing stigma, specifically related to the fear of personally receiving a diagnosis of dementia. Additionally, the study results could help researchers carry out equitable, inclusive and supportive recruitment for clinical trials towards the prevention of dementia.
