Assistive Technology to Support People with MCI & Dementia in the Workplace
Can customized technology help individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s remain independent in the workplace?

Background
For individuals living with early Alzheimer’s, research has shown that remaining in the workplace as long as possible can increase independence, prevent social isolation, and help maintain brain health. However, as Alzheimer’s progresses, an individual will gradually lose the ability to carry out vital tasks related to their employment on their own. Technology such as apps, devices, and software programs are often used in the workplace to simplify daily tasks including calendar reminders, appointment scheduling, and record keeping. Dr. Emma Dixon and colleagues aim to identify ways in which technology can be utilized to foster workplace independence for individuals with Alzheimer’s.
Research Plan
Dr. Dixon and team will recruit individuals with Alzheimer’s who are employed part- or full-time for their studies. First, the researchers will interview at least 25 individuals to identify common tasks that individuals need assistance with, what technologies they currently use to help perform their workplace tasks, and what challenges they face in using new technology. Next, the team will create custom assistive technology toolkits for participants based on each participants’ individual workplace needs. Individuals will be trained how to use their technology toolkit and will use their toolkit for three months in the workplace. Lastly, Dr. Dixon and colleagues will conduct follow-up interviews to evaluate the impact of assistive technology in the workplace.
Impact
The results of this study will shed new light on how Alzheimer's impacts an individual's ability to complete daily work activities. If successful, it will also identify a cost-effective method to help people living with Alzheimer’s remain independent in workplace.
