WATKINS GLEN, NY, Oct. 20, 2022 – Elmira and Southern Tier area residents last weekend participated in this year’s Watkins Glen Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Participants raised more than $75,000 to help fund the care, support and research programs of the Alzheimer’s Association. Donations for this Walk and the chapter’s additional two Finger Lakes Walks will be accepted through Dec. 31, 2022.

“Our Walk to End Alzheimer’s is our largest fundraiser each year,” said Teresa Galbier, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester Finger Lakes Chapter. “Thousands of people from across our nine-county region come out to help raise awareness and funds for our robust research and our full complement of free programs and services. We couldn’t be happier with the turnout at our final Walk of the season and we are so grateful for the support we receive from the community.”

Jan van den Blink, CEO of the Hilliard Corp., served as Walk Chairman for our Watkins Glen Walk this year.

“I participated in this Walk as Alzheimer’s took my mother from being a very active community member and chairwoman of the Hilliard Corp. to someone who disappeared from us. This is a disease that needs to be conquered and whatever we can do to help in that effort is well worth it,” van den Blink said. “Together, we can end this disease.”

Rose Carnegie, who has joined us in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the last 25 years, was the top individual fundraiser this year. Rose has raised roughly $7,500 so far this year, while her team, the Carnegie Walkers has raised more than $8,200. The octogenarian, who walks in honor of her late husband, could be seen in her purple jacket out on the race track at Saturday’s event, enjoying the company of her family and others who helped raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Nearly 300 other walkers joined Rose and the Carnegie Walkers at this year’s Walk at Watkins Glen International. Pre-walk festivities included the Elmira College Danceline and Cheerleaders  performing to get the Walkers warmed up, as well as a live broadcast from media sponsor WINK radio and a lovely performance of the Star Spangled Banner by Sophia McMaster on her viola. Many thanks go out to media sponsor WENY TV for its weeklong coverage, and thank you to Michael Printup, President of Watkins Glen International, for his generosity and commitment to our cause.

Local Walk sponsors include Hilliard Corp., Wegmans Food Markets, Watkins Glen International, Guthrie, Visiting Angels, Arnot Health, Carefirst, Chemung Supply Corporation, Elmira Structures, Southern Tier Custom Fabrications, Hale Roofing, Nucor/Vulcraft, Mengel Metzger Barr & Company, Fagan Engineers, WENY and WINK.

The chapter has raised a combined total of more than $422,000 to date toward its goal of $607,000. Donations can be made to each of the three Walks at alz.org/walk.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In New York state alone, there are more than 410,000 people living with the disease and 563,000 unpaid family caregivers.
