    Educational Programs and Dementia Care Resources

    Alzheimer's and dementia don't come with an instruction manual, but there are resources available to help. Use these free education programs to learn more about what to expect and how to prepare for the future.

    How to begin a free online course

    1. Browse our catalog or click one of the programs listed on this page.
    2. Click "Add to Cart," then "View Cart."
    3. You will be directed to either login or create an account if you do not already have one.
    4. After checking out, click "Go to Dashboard."
    5. You will see the course in your "Active Courses" tab. Click "Go to Course."
    6. You can exit the course at any time and resume it later by visiting the "Active Courses" tab of your dashboard.

    Programs for caregivers

    • Dementia Conversations: Driving, Doctor Visits, Legal & Financial Planning — Learn to have honest and caring conversations about common concerns when someone begins to show signs of dementia.
    • Transitions in Care — Moving a loved one with dementia into a long-term care community can be emotionally challenging. This program offers tips and support to help you assess needs, explore options, understand coverage and stay involved.
    • Managing Money — Caregivers: How much do you know about managing money? This free online program by the Alzheimer’s Association will help you learn about the costs of caregiving and the benefits of early planning, and teach you how to avoid financial abuse and fraud, start a conversation about finances, assess financial and legal needs, and find support. Take the course in Spanish.

    The Empowered Caregiver

    This series teaches caregivers how to navigate the responsibilities of caring for someone living with dementia. Caregivers can register for individual courses to meet their needs or complete the entire series. Topics include:
     
    • Building Foundations of Caregiving explores the role of caregiver and changes they may experience, building a support team and managing caregiver stress.
    • Supporting Independence focuses on helping the person living with dementia take part in daily activities, providing the right amount of support and balancing safety and independence while managing expectations.
    • Communicating Effectively teaches how dementia affects communication, including tips for communicating well with family, friends and health care professionals.
    • Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors details common behavior changes and how they are a form of communication, non-medical approaches to behaviors and recognizing when additional help is needed.
    • Exploring Care and Support Services examines how best to prepare for future care decisions and changes, including respite care, residential care and end-of life care.
