Creating Dementia-Friendly Reading Material
3/20/2025, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. | Presented by Susan Ostrowski, MA, MS, CCC-SLP, ASHA-Certified Speech-Language Pathologist, Co-Founder, Reading2ConnectWho should attend?
- Professionals working in the field of dementia care
- Activity professionals responsible for creating opportunities for meaningful engagement
- Family caregivers interested in learning ways to connect with their loved ones throughout the disease process.
Why Attend?
You will learn:- Two reading skills that are often preserved for someone living with dementia.
- Three text modifications are often needed as dementia advances.
- Three benefits of adapted reading for people living with dementia.
Summary
This one-hour session will debunk three preconceptions involving our belief of what adult reading text should look like; our limited idea of what it means to read; and our notion that individuals living with dementia can no longer read. Attendees will learn how dementia affects the reading process and will practice creating age/dementia-friendly reading material. Interactive reading will be demonstrated, which provides support for expression and helps to deepen relationships. Most extraordinary, adapted reading can lessen isolation and boredom, and provide authentic opportunities for independence, competency, and learning.
